if you can sit with pain

mine or your own

without moving to hide it

or fade it

or fix it.

I want to know

if you can be with joy

if you can dance with wildness

and let the ecstasy fill you

to the tips of your fingers and toes

without cautioning us

to be careful

to be realistic

to remember the limitations

of being human.

It doesn't interest me

if the story you are telling me

is true.

I want to know if you can

disappoint another

to be true to yourself.

If you can bear

the accusation of betrayal

and not betray your own soul.

If you can be faithless

and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty

even when it is not pretty

every day.

And if you can source your own life

from its presence.

I want to know

if you can live with failure

yours and mine

and still stand at the edge of the lake

and shout to the silver of the full moon,

"Yes."

It doesn't interest me

to know where you live

or how much money you have.

I want to know if you can get up

after the night of grief and despair

weary and bruised to the bone

and do what needs to be done

to feed the children.

It doesn't interest me

who you know

or how you came to be here.

I want to know if you will stand

in the centre of the fire

with me

and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me

where or what or with whom

you have studied.

I want to know

what sustains you

from the inside

when all else falls away.

I want to know

if you can be alone

with yourself

and if you truly like

the company you keep

in the empty moments.

While it's true that not every child gets a present or even celebrates Christmas, and it's possible that millions of children go without any celebratory moments on Christmas day, it's an opportunity for those of us who are "okay" to give a gift or two because we can. 

Not every child is fortunate enough to have one or two parents or the nurturing environment that all of us assume is "just a reality." One thing, however, remains true no matter whether it is Christmas or not: those of us who know we are fortunate and feel grateful want to extend compassion on special occasions to others.

Every day is a struggle for children in need in a world that often marginalizes them at critical times when they most need inspiration and a little spark of welcomed excitement.

Giving a gift on Christmas won't fix a child's circumstances but think about it, there is a moment in all our lives when we "recognized something wonderful happened" that energized us, made us resolute with inner power to go after our dreams. A moment in time, like receiving a special gift, can change the direction of a little life for the better. Maybe, that one spark we received was enough to jumpstart years of effort to succeed. 

So, this Christmas, or this holiday season, consider reaching out and helping just a little bit to bring joy to some who will be excited to receive a gift they likely never expected to receive.

How do you define the Metaverse?

Second Life continues to steam along with about 900,000 SL Citizens (users) every day. There are many ways to learn how to operate in Second Life. For gamers it's easy because often they already understand the controls (mostly) and know what to expect. However, if you are a first-time user entering a virtual world it can seem very daunting. 

If you would like to connect with people around the world, create networks of close friends, or just want to hang-out at clubs playing your favorite genre of music but don't have a clue how to start you can:

"The recipe was first shared by Queen Elizabeth in a letter to President Dwight D. Eisenhower back in 1960. The original letter and recipe, which is available in the National Archives, reveals that the Queen served the pancakes (which are actually called "drop scones") to Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie, when they visited the queen at her castle in Balmoral."

Ingredients

4 teacups flour

4 tablespoons caster sugar (or granulated sugar)

2 teacups milk

2 whole eggs

2 teaspoons bicarbonate soda (or baking soda)

3 teaspoons cream of tartar

2 tablespoons melted butter

Directions

"Beat eggs, sugar, and about half the milk together, add flour, and mix well together, adding remainder of milk as required, also bicarbonate and cream of tartar, fold in the melted butter."

The Queen's recipe ends there so in true royal fashion, there's a bit of secrecy when it comes to how long to cook them and what exactly is a teacup, anyway?

Here's what we suggest: 1 teacup = approximately 3/4 cup so you'll need 3 cups flour and 1 1/2 cups milk. Heat a griddle with some melted butter and drop the batter by the spoonful onto the griddle. Then, as is the case with pancakes, when bubbles start to form, flip to the other side and continue to cook until golden. The finished result will be pancakes fit for a queen! 👑

If you want human connection this is the place to do it. The personal connections you can make will feel just as deep, profound, and as abiding as in real life, sometimes even deeper. Whether or not you work too much, you're on a furlough from work, in-between jobs, or maybe Covid & variants are keeping you home away from connecting to family, friends, and loved ones - good news, you can do it all here in Second Life!

If you want to go solo and experience SL alone, you can certainly do that, too. Go on adventures, get creature - animal - fantasy type avatar skins and clothing. You can rent/buy an exclusive island, spend time on your hobby like photography, building, or you can "just be" almost any way you like. In fact, many use SL for real life family members and friends much like chat rooms, IM's, calls, Zoom, Facetime, and more. You can pick a spot everyone loves and just hang out together. Even co-workers, clubs, church members, sororities, fraternities, veterans, and every day real companies have a presence in Second Life.

To sum it up, SL is what you make it, and you can go as deep and involved or as light and silly as you want to make it. If you're stuck at home or living with a disability, SL gets you "up and out" of your home and connects you with a wide variety of people, places and things you will enjoy!

Second Life is the place for human connection no matter what your particular interests, hobbies, disciplines, or life choices may be! Oh, and you can fly!
